A student budget for Kanpur needs more than a room-rent figure. Add meals, utilities, your actual journey to class, study-space costs and personal spending, then plan coaching payments and move-in cash separately. This prevents a low advertised rent from becoming an incomplete budget.
There is no single monthly total that fits every student. Your teaching campus, room occupancy, meal arrangement and course payment schedule determine the amount. This guide combines a few provider-published examples with a clearly labelled sample worksheet. The sample amounts are planning assumptions, not verified Kanpur market averages.
Start with your campus, room and study routine
Confirm the building where your selected batch will study before choosing accommodation. A room near an institute’s office may not suit classes held elsewhere. Include test and doubt-session locations when checking the daily route.
Compare accommodation, coaching and any separate library as one routine. Our Kakadeo vs Kidwai Nagar guide explains the location questions to resolve; use your own route check to establish travel time and cost.
Decide whether you need a shared room, exclusive occupancy or kitchen access. For each quote, record whether the amount is per person or for the whole room. Do not divide a room price between occupants until the provider confirms the arrangement and charge.
What published local examples can tell you
Examples checked on 4 November 2026:
| Published example | Figure shown | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| DiviStays courtyard-side room, Kakadeo, Room ID 08 | ₹4,799 per month | Occupancy-based charge, availability and complete inclusions. |
| DiviStays studio with private kitchen, Room ID 01 | ₹7,999 per month | Occupancy-based charge, availability and separate bills. |
| Adarsh Library six-hour monthly study plan | ₹600 | Available shift, operating days and applicable terms. |
| Adarsh Library twelve-hour monthly study plan | ₹1,200 | Seat availability, included services and additional charges. |
The DiviStays room register marked the listed rooms occupied when reviewed. These are advertised examples, not available-room offers or an area-wide rent range. A kitchen does not establish that prepared meals are supplied. Ask for a fresh, complete quote.
Adarsh Library’s own price page lists the study plans above. A separate study seat is optional in your budget: determine whether your accommodation and class schedule already provide the study space you need.

Build the recurring monthly living budget
The worksheet below is a hypothetical example for one student. Every number is an illustrative input, including rent, food and travel. Replace each line with your accepted quote or realistic spending estimate; none is a claim about a typical student’s costs.
| Monthly expense | Illustrative amount | How to replace the assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Room payment | ₹6,000 | Use the charge for your agreed occupancy. |
| Food | ₹3,000 | Include every meal, delivery and food outside the plan. |
| Utilities | ₹500 | Use the agreed electricity and other separate charges. |
| Local travel | ₹600 | Calculate your actual trips and fares. |
| Separate study seat | ₹600 | Use your chosen plan, or zero if unnecessary. |
| Mobile/data | ₹300 | Use your own recharge or billing cycle. |
| Personal items, printing and laundry | ₹700 | Estimate from your requirements and revise after moving. |
| Illustrative monthly living total | ₹11,700 | Before coaching, move-in payments and any contingency. |
If meals or utilities are already included in rent, add only the remaining extra spending. For example, do not enter the full food allowance again when a confirmed accommodation package already covers those meals. Keep the components visible even when one payment bundles them.
Work out food costs from the meals actually supplied
Ask a PG, mess or tiffin provider for a dated quote specifying breakfast, lunch and dinner separately. Establish the number of service days, portions, delivery coverage and what happens during holidays or examination periods.
A lunch-only subscription leaves breakfast and dinner to budget for. A two-meal package may still leave snacks, drinks and missed-service days outside the price. If cooking, include groceries, fuel and any utensils you need rather than treating kitchen access as a complete food arrangement.
This guide does not establish a current complete monthly meal price for your address. The sample food figure is therefore a placeholder, not a meal-provider quote. Confirm the plan against your class times before using its price in a final budget.
Calculate travel from your real weekly pattern
List the journeys you expect to pay for: classes, tests, a library, errands and occasional station trips. For a regular commute, multiply the confirmed one-way fare by the number of paid journeys per day and expected attendance days. Add any separate first- or last-leg transport.
Check fares for the route and mode you will actually use. Do not assume that two rooms in the same locality have the same travel cost, or that walking is practical without checking the route. Keep home visits and long-distance travel separate from the everyday commute.
Separate coaching’s monthly planning cost from its payment dates
Obtain the complete course fee for your batch and session. Ask what tuition, materials, tests and other charges include, and identify admission payments or deposits separately. Our JEE and NEET coaching-fees guide explains why a booking amount is insufficient for estimating total tuition.
Hypothetical calculation: a course costing ₹72,000 over a twelve-month planning period represents ₹6,000 per month when spread evenly. Adding that to the sample living total gives a planning figure of ₹17,700 per month. The ₹72,000 course price is invented solely for this calculation; it is not an institute’s quotation.
The institute may require payment upfront or in instalments. Write the actual amounts beside their due dates. An averaged monthly figure does not change that schedule, and tuition already paid should not be counted again as a new monthly cash payment. Include a monthly reserve only where it is still needed for unpaid future fees.
Allow separately for move-in cash
Distinguish recurring spending from refundable deposits and initial purchases. A deposit ties up cash even if it is expected to be returned later; establish the written conditions and timeline before paying.
Here is a second hypothetical calculation, using the same sample monthly living total:
- First month’s living spending: ₹11,700, including that month’s room payment.
- Assumed refundable accommodation deposit: ₹6,000.
- Assumed bedding and initial essentials: ₹1,500.
- Assumed travel to move to Kanpur: ₹1,000.
- Illustrative starting cash: ₹20,200, plus the actual coaching payment due and any extra contingency.
The deposit and setup amounts are assumptions, not local quoted rates. If advance rent covers the same first month, do not add that rent twice. Use the actual coaching instalment due at joining instead of automatically adding the averaged ₹6,000 figure from the earlier example.
Turn the worksheet into your own budget
- Collect written room, meal and course quotations for the exact arrangements you want.
- Mark every amount as confirmed, estimated or optional.
- Record payment dates separately from monthly averages.
- Keep a contingency that fits your circumstances rather than treating the worksheet total as a spending ceiling.
- After moving, record the first few weeks of actual spending and revise the estimates.
Compare alternatives using the whole bill. A room with a higher rent can only be judged against another after accounting for meals, utilities, travel and the study facilities each arrangement includes.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ₹11,700 example describe the average cost of living in Kanpur?
No. It is a worked example built from hypothetical inputs. Your accepted quotations and spending needs determine your total.
Should a refundable deposit count as a monthly expense?
Track it separately as upfront cash committed. Keep the receipt and agreed return conditions, and avoid treating it as money available for monthly spending.
Can I budget only for rent and coaching?
Add food, utilities, travel and personal requirements, then remove items already included in a confirmed package. This makes the calculation complete without double counting.
